Alley Cat Explores | Shannon Point Seafood | Anacortes Washington

Embark on a captivating aerial exploration over the remnants of Shannon Point Seafoods, an abandoned pier in Anacortes, WA, that whispers tales of a bygone era. This urbex adventure reveals a derelict landmark, once a bustling hub of Anacortes’s fishing industry, now a ghostly scene awaiting rebirth.

Shannon Point Seafoods pier, nestled in Anacortes, Skagit County, traces its origins back to Anacortes’s fishing heyday, when salmon ruled and schooners laden with cod sailed from Alaska. This site, which housed the Sanitary Fish Company (1914-1931), Anacortes Canning Company (1931-1955), Nakat Packing Corp. (1955-1974), Ebb Tide Processing, Inc. (1974-1988), and Shannon Point Seafoods and Nelbro Packing (1988-2002), is one of the few remaining cannery buildings from this flourishing period.

The 1990s marked a turbulent phase for the site, with a devastating fire in 1994 releasing toxic smoke and forcing mass evacuations. Despite cleanup efforts, including the removal of contaminated soil in 2001, the site gradually succumbed to neglect. This once-vibrant location now lies in decay, with collapsed roofs, broken windows, and graffiti-covered walls bearing silent testimony to its turbulent past.

The Anacortes waterfront, including the Shannon Point area, is undergoing transformation. Recent efforts focus on cleaning up the historic industrial sites to foster new economic development and enhance the marine environment. Cleanup initiatives aim to remove harmful elements like contaminated soil and creosote-treated pilings. Companies like Stabbert Maritime have embarked on redevelopment plans, aiming to revitalize the area while preserving its rich maritime heritage.

In this video, witness the eerie beauty of Shannon Point Seafoods through the lens of a drone, capturing the haunting allure of its derelict structures. Join us in rediscovering a forgotten chapter of Anacortes’s maritime history, and ponder the potential of its future as the city breathes new life into these once-vital shores.
